What a wonderful weekend!
I was so honored to have the privilege of teaching a weekend workshop at Marc Adam's School of Woodworking and Time Honored Crafts. It was my very first time teaching in person and this wonderful group of people made it such a fun experience.
Each student learned the basics of clay sculpting and needle felting. They practiced pastel blushing techniques and learned how to sculpt basic forms from wool to be able to apply it to their finished pieces. Then we had a sketching session so each of them could customize their creature to their liking. Using the template I provided, each of them adjusted it to their liking and then we got to work in bringing each idea to life.
Each student learned how to build a wire armature and we made slight alterations to each depending on the size and structure. It was so amazing to see each individual's creativity come out. Suddenly the classroom was filled with a variety of colors and textures as the creatures began to take form.
Thanks to Mr. Chris (Above) we were able to make some truly unique display stands for our creatures! With his guidance and knowledge in wood dyes and airbrushing, each student customized one their liking. We set magnets into the stands with a drill press and in addition, magnets to match into the feet of the creatures. This method ensure that the final pieces would stand with a secure connection.
Saturday was focused on learning techniques and beginning the sculpting process, most of the day was spent forming the heads, hands, and feet of their creatures and coloring each with pastel blush. By the end of the day, most of the students had their sculpted pieces in the oven.
By Sunday, we began the process of armature building and needle felting the bodies and the sculpted pieces were attached. The students had so much fun making accessories for their creatures and truly making them their own. It was truly such a fun weekend and I hope to teach many more workshops in the future!
